Summary: While remarkable strides have been made in understanding fundamental neuroscience over the last decade, insights into mechanisms underlying sleep and its disorders have come more slowly. In recognition of the need to focus upon sleep research, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) established the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research (NCSDR) within the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI).
